I'll be among the first to admit these huge get-togethers are not the most ideal way of seeing folks I haven't seen in a while. But I faced a challenge and, high-flying business strategy consultant that I am, cracked the case as follows:
SITUATION
I'm flying into San Francisco, a city I love but also have many loves in -- colleagues, classmates, friends (all mutually exclusive). Furthermore, 29 years of experience have demonstrated that people and relationships are paramount to me.
COMPLICATION
I'm only in town for a weekend, with most of my time pre-booked by work-related events. This imparts very little time for the high quality meetups I'd much rather do.
KEY QUESTIONS
1. What should I do about this?
2. What will be the potential ramifications?
3. Am I fabulous?
After building a huge model in Excel, here are my recommendations:
WHAT TO DO » Hold "a very happy hour or two (reprise)" at one of my favorite straight-friendly watering holes, Blackbird, in the Castro.
RAMIFICATIONS » People might get miffed about the impersonal nature, but I'd much rather take their (hopefully) momentary annoyance if it means at least a hug and chat over a frosty pre-dinner brew.
FABULOUS » Uh, obvs!!!

Please join me once again for the "so impersonal it must be personal" thing of inviting a slew of you out for a very happy hour or two (reprise). Unfortunately, Blackbird doesn't have happy hour at this time, but your mere presence will make it happy. Very, very happy. (More on Blackbird:

Everyone's welcome, so feel free to forward away -- particularly to your hot friends. No one should be denied a very happy hour or two (reprise), and I promise great company. After all, fab begets fab.
