PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT AND BOOK LAUNCH!
10 Canadian LGBT photographers celebrate 100 Canadian queers in the arts in an group exhibit and book launch set to be unveiled during Pride in Toronto.
During Toronto Pride (a multi-million dollar tourist draw and celebration of queer culture held from June 24 to July 3, 2011), there is an obvious lack of representation for the queer arts as part of its main agenda. That’s why we gathered 10 notable photographers from the city’s LGBT community and tasked them each with capturing 10 of their favourite queers in the arts. The result: 100 portraits that reflect a part – and capture a moment – of Canada’s thriving and diverse arts scene. A book will accompany the pilot project with all 100 photographs, slated to be available for pre-order at the beginning of June.
An opening reception of the exhibit is also planned for Thursday, June 30 at 7 p.m. at the show’s downtown gallery space, THE WHITE HOUSE STUDIO PROJECT at 277.5 Augusta Avenue.
There's an appetite for the arts in the queer community and we noticed a really nice crossroad between LBGT culture and the Toronto arts community, so it’s a nice idea to shine a light on people who have made significant contributions to both. There are also so many new faces in the arts who are queer and we want to showcase that too.
An advanced viewing of the exhibit goes live on Monday, June 27 to coincide with Toronto Pride festivities, offering visitors and locals a chance to veer off the beaten parade path to explore another niche of Canadian LGBT culture that is both enthralling and inspiring.
The exhibit features photographs by: Tania Anderson, Joey Bruni, Paul Buen, John Caffery, InkedKenny, Patrick Lightheart, David Pike, G. Elliott Simpson, Tanja-Tiziana, and Rannie Turingan
Proceeds from the book will go toward an award in the form of a grant for a young LGBT person or group seeking money for an arts project. The show runs from Monday, June 27 through Friday, July 8. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m at The White House Studio Space, 277.5 Augusta Ave., Toronto.
