There’s a reason it’s not called the Blasé ’20s or The Okay Gatsby. The Jazz Age was a rip-roaring era of self-indulgence, lavishness, and uninhibited fun. But just because it’s a thing of the past doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate it. So says the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island.
There are plenty of things to be jazzed about: There’s the wardrobe (attendees are encouraged to sport period attire), the festivities (Charleston lessons, rides in a rumble seat, the tappin’ and flappin’ Minsky Sisters), and of course the music (1920s records on antique phonographs, stride pianist-and-singer duo Gelber & Manning, Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra). You should also look out for the pie recipe contest, the hat parade, and vintage clothing dealers. Want more? Fine. How about St-Germain cocktails, beer from the Brooklyn Brewery, and gourmet food?
