New versions of technologies that make up the fabric of the web (HTML5, CSS3), along with JavaScript frameworks like jQuery, are revolutionizing web design, for both desktop and mobile. But the tools we UX professionals use to define both structure and behavior are frequently incapable of expressing the full range of web-native interactions.
Designing experiences using native web code instead can help us overcome those limitations and make us better designers. The process of building out our ideas in the same medium in which they will be implemented makes us better able to understand what is possible. In this presentation you'll learn about creating interactive prototypes that will thrill stakeholders, designers and developers alike. We'll review some of the ways of organizing information and creating rich interactions that can be done with code. We'll also walk through specific techniques, tricks and web-based tools, many of which require no prior coding knowledge to start using. Through prototyping, you'll get closer to both the finished product and to the designers and developers who will be ultimately translating and implementing it.

Jen Matson is an interaction designer and former front-end developer who has been designing, variously, for web, kiosks and mobile since 1994. She has worked in a variety of industries, from entertainment to technology, with clients including Comedy Central, LEGO, Microsoft and T-Mobile. Currently Senior User Experience Architect at Ascentium, she has helped cross-disciplinary teams, both in-house and external, embrace rapid, web-native prototyping in HTML, CSS and JavaScript to deliver users the best possible user experiences.
