International Grand Marshal Contingent in the Pride Parade: Come and Join Us in Showing Our Support for Queer and Trans Human Rights Around the World
Join us as we celebrate and march in solidarity with 2011 International Grand Marshal, Angie Umbac as she will be proudly lead the 31st Pride Parade, highlighting queer and trans human rights issues at home and around the world that continue to affect queer and trans communities including:
Discrimination and Equality,
Homophobia and Transphobia,
Gender identity and
Criminalization of Homosexuality and Trans in Countries.
Angie was chosen as 2011 International Grand Marshal for championing the issues of gender and development in her personal and professional life. She is a legal rights activist and heads a volunteer non-profit organization, Rainbow Rights Project that provides the Philippine queer and trans community with free legal assistance on issues of law and policy reform. She is Director for Human Rights of a lawyer’s group, trustee of Ladlad LGBT Party List, and an advisory board member of All Out, the LGBT global campaigning organization.
The Yogyakarta Principles (
www.yogyakartaprinciples.org) is a universal guide to human rights which affirms to outline a set of international principles relating to sexual orientation and gender identity. It is a binding international legal standards with which all States must comply. They promise a different future where all people born free and equal in dignity and rights can fulfill that precious birthright. These governments and other actors should end violence, abuse, and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, and ensure full equality. Each principle is accompanied by detailed recommendations to states on how to end discrimination and abuse.
The Government of Philippines did not sign the Declaration on the Yogyakarta Principle relating to Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity passed by the United Nations. The declaration denounces harassment, discrimination, prejudice and violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Further, it has not recognized same-sex marriage and civil partnership. Both government and religious sectors are impeding the enactment of Anti-Discrimination bill which protects and respects the rights of LGBT community.
So many reasons that you should join and march behind the International Grand Marshal, Angie Umbac to lead 31st Pride Parade and we will be carrying the traveling banner of the Yogyakarta Principles in the Contingent.
