To celebrate Vancouver’s 125th birthday, the City of Vancouver will host a free, family-friendly arts and entertainment extravaganza on the weekend of July 8-10, 2011 (Friday to Sunday).
Summer Live will be held in Stanley Park—one of Vancouver’s most treasured places and a space that is steeped in history. This multi-disciplinary, outdoor event will be presented on multiple stages and spaces—all of it free to the public. Summer Live celebrates Vancouver’s vibrant cultural community, drawing on the city’s rich ethnic diversity, First Nations heritage and contemporary creative focus.
The Summer Live event at Brockton Point in Stanley Park will include:
• Free performances by top Vancouver and international artists including The New Pornographers, Neko Case, Mother Mother, Daniel Wesley, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra conducted by Bramwell Tovey, Dan Mangan, Spirit of the West, Barney Bentall and the Legendary Hearts, the Zolas, Celso Machado, Said the Whale, Hey Ocean, En Karma, Fond of Tigers, and renowned Indian violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam.
• Coast Salish storytelling and drum songs with members of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
• A diverse showcase of arts and culture including the joyful wonder of Public Dreams, the contemporary butoh of Kokoro Dance, performances and workshops by the Taiyuan Puppet Theatre Company of Taiwan, a special Bollywood Birthday Party by South Asian Arts dance and theatre company, a survey of Vancouver video art, and sensational projections by Urban Visuals.
• Family entertainment and all-ages participatory sports events including a volleyball tournament and a sports day with fun activities like the classic three-legged race.
• A free shuttle bus from Waterfront Station (downtown) to the festival will run daily from 11am to 11pm; and a free, secure bicycle compound at Brockton Point will provide an easy way to safely park bikes at Stanley Park during the Summer Live festival.
New additions to the program include:
• A diverse mix of music by Beat Nation Live, Silk Road and Jou Tou, Veda Hille, Aidan Knight, Birds of Paradox, Zapato Negro and Saint-Pierre.
• Coast Salish canoe races in Coal Harbour, Slahal games, storyteller Henry Charles and dance groups Children of Takaya, Musqueam Warriors and Welh Tima Kexwusem.
• Kite-making, boat-building, and juggling workshops in the KidZone and Asian synth pop/art duo Guimauves, youth dance groups FRESHH / ILLEST VIBE and the Dusty Flower Pot Cabaret on the family stage.
• eatART’s Mondo Spider and Titanaboa giant robotic creatures, Tangible Interaction Company’s sensory experiences and giant Jenga and Twister board games from Public Dreams.
• Family sports activities: drop-in mini-soccer, youth volleyball tournament, tennis, badminton and croquet, and BC Lions kicking and throwing clinics.
• The Coiled River – environmental art created from invasive plant species; Speak the Unseen – a participatory mural; and an origami heron pathway by Joseph Wu and Naomi Singer.
Activities run daily from noon to 11pm at Brockton Point in Stanley Park. A free shuttle bus from Waterfront Station runs from 11am to 11pm each day, and a free, secure bicycle compound will be available for cyclists.
