No joke.
On June 1, 2012, myself and 50 other UT students will represent the 2012 LIVESTRONG Texas 4000 team as we cycle 4,556 miles from UT's campus all the way to Anchorage, Alaska.
Texas 4000 is a non-profit organization at the University of Texas at Austin created by a student in 2004 who suffered from cancer himself and decided to combine his passion of biking and fighting cancer. Every summer since, Texas 4000 has been sending students on a mission to spread hope, knowledge, and charity throughout the United States and Canada, making it the world's longest charity ride.
Half of us will make our journey through the Rockies, and the other half along the California coast. In each community we cycle through, we will make cancer awareness presentations, helping to educate people on cancer prevention and early detection.
My teammates and I will spend the next year planning all the details for our entire summer. We will be responsible for finding housing and food along the way, securing media opportunities, preparing a program, volunteering, and training. However, we can't do it alone. In order to make this trip successful, we need your help.
Each rider is responsible for raising a minimum of $4500. That is approximately $1 for every mile we ride. With your help, I hope to raise all that and then some. There is never too little a donation. Even a penny makes a difference!
There three ways that you can donate:
1. Online.
Visit
http://www.texas4000.org/give/donate and through PayPal, you can make a donation using your credit card. Don’t forget to put "Shea Flynn" in the “description” field, so that I can receive credit for your donation.
2. By Check.
Pay to the order of “Texas 4000 for Cancer”, with "Shea Flynn" in the memo line, and mail it to:
Texas 4000
901 S. Mopac Building
Building 1, Suite 300
Austin, TX 78746
3. In person.
I'd love to meet with you personally to hear your story and tell you more about why I ride.
ALL DONATIONS TO TEXAS 4000 ARE 100% TAX DEDUCTIBLE since we are a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit.
Even if you can't donate, you can help by inviting others to this event to spread the word! Tell your family, friends, and coworkers. The more people who hear about our mission the better!
If you would like to find out more information about the organization, please do not hesitate to ask me or visit our website:
http://www.texas4000.org/.
Also, we dedicate every workout we do, every meeting we have, and every day of our journey to someone we know who has dealt with cancer. I would love to hear your story and remember you or your loved one along the way. Please send me an email at shea_flynn@utexas.edu or Facebook message, so that I can share what you have to say.
Thank you all so much for your support. It not only means the world to me, but to everyone else that will be affected by our journey. None of this would be possible without you!
I wish you all the best,
Shea
