On July 13, Bay Area photojournalist Shane Bauer will spend his second birthday unjustly detained in Evin Prison in Iran. We're hosting a reception and presentation at the RayKo Photo Center to show Shane's work, celebrate his life and recognize the contributions of all the photojournalists who put their safety on the line to tell important and overlooked stories.
Please join us to celebrate Shane and his work, remember Josh and bring light to their imprisonment so that the Iranian government can no longer ignore our calls for justice.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Sarah Shourd, Shane's fiancé, spent 410 days in solitary confinement in Evin before being released in September 2010.
Kim Komenich, a Pulitzer-Prize winning photographer, supports the Dart Center’s work with journalists who suffer PTSD.
Lou Demattais, a former Reuters staff photographer, was based in Nicaragua and covered the US-backed Contra War.
Shon MeckFessel, the “fourth hiker,” escaped captivity by the sheer chance that he stayed in the hotel with a cold the morning that Shane, Josh and Sarah went hiking.
There will be a slideshow of Shane's photographs, a new video about his work and his detainment and a screening of "Songs of Enemies and Deserts," a film he made with David Martinez that documents a group of armed rebels in Darfur. In addition, we will be exhibiting photographs from Kim Komenich’s and Lou Demattais. Food and beverages will be on sale, with proceeds going to the campaign.
ABOUT THE HIKERS
Shane, now 28, Sarah and their close friend Josh Fattal were detained without cause or provocation on July 31, 2009 while on vacation in Iraqi Kurdistan. The three friends, all graduates of UC Berkeley, were hiking behind a famous waterfall near the unmarked Iranian border. Shane and Sarah were living in Damascus, Syria at the time while Shane worked as a freelance journalist reporting on the Middle East and Sarah taught English to Iraqi refugees. Josh, an environmental educator, was visiting them.
Shane and Josh share a 10 by 14 foot cell and have been allowed to make brief telephone calls to their families only three times in almost 2 years. Shane and Josh are innocent of any crime and, as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch report, their extended detention is a violation of Iranian and international law.
