The Tesla Memorial Society from New York are asking all Tesla admirers around the world to help us achieve our goal of proclaiming July 10th, "Nikola Tesla Day", an international day celebrated by people all around the globe. This day will be a day of remembrance of Tesla's work and his contribution to humanity. This day will be important for science, peace, progress and brotherhood among nations and religions around the world.
What makes Tesla deserving of a holiday, and why was he written out of the history books?
Nikola Tesla was born in Croatia to Serbian parents in 1856 and moved to Paris in 1882, where he began working for the Continental Edison Company (An overseas division of Thomas Edison's company).
In 1884, with a letter of recommendation from his employer, he moved to New York to work directly for Edison. During his time working for Edison Machine Works, he was tasked with solving some of the company's more difficult problems. He claimed that he could improve upon Edison's inefficient direct current and motors, to which Edison replied "There's fifty-thousand dollars in it for you - if you can do it". Well, Tesla did it, and when he asked Edison about his money, he replied "Tesla, you just don't understand American humor!" Tesla immediately resigned and thus began the war of the currents.
Inventions and discoveries attributed to Tesla (some stolen by other inventors) include:
Induction Motors (Used in every kitchen appliance or motorized toy today)
Alternating Current (What powers homes all over the world)
Radios (Marconi used 18 of Tesla's patents for his "invention")
Radar
X-rays
Hydro-electric plants
Remotes
Ball lightning
Transistors
Neon lights
Wireless communication
Wireless electricity
An earthquake machine
The DEATH RAY
Tesla Coils
So why was he written out of history books? Well, he was kind of insane. He was celibate his entire life, afraid of round things, and fell in love with a pigeon. He also suffered from hallucinations and delusions. No doubt, because of his genius, he was quite terrifying to the people that ran our government, specifically because, even though he was an American, he was born in CROATIA. The day he died, alone and broke in a New York hotel room, J. Edgar Hoover ordered the FBI to collect all of his things, including his newest inventions and blueprints (some believe the blueprints to the death ray were taken in this raid) and nobody has seen them since.
