From the very first shot of “Tape” the tone is incredulous. Why is this guy shot-gunning a beer with one hand, and dumping another one down the sink? Like the start of any play, the stage is being prepared. A film like Tape defines the term “independent” to the core. Ingredients; three complex characters, one little hotel room, and an alleged transgression that happened when they were in high school. With 10 years to reflect, the group is now placed in a situation that pushes them to explore revenge, justice, and repentance. Based on the stage play by Stephen Belber, Ethan Hawke presented the script to director, Richard Linklater. Like the play, the film takes place in real time and unravels perception of an event from 3 acute angles. Richard Linklater is a staple in the world of independent film. In between larger productions, a true indie gold nugget like "Tape"+ can take us back to indie films that have borders. The boundaries of a four walled room isn’t exactly a highly desired setting for filmmakers. Linklater pulls off shots in this film that the majority wouldn’t dare risk. He manages to give a point of view that transports you into the room, smoking a cigarette, and arguing.
