KAPA is happy to invite you to Social Soju, a low-key, informal monthly get-together where we'll discuss social issues with good company and strong drinks.
Did you know that according to the Census, NY’s Asian population is bigger than the ones in San Fran and L.A. combined? Our numbers have topped one million for the first time ever, and with 1 in 8 NYers being Asian, we're the city’s fastest-growing racial group by far.
However, and as highlighted in last month's NY Times article, Asian New Yorkers Seek Power to Match Numbers, those numbers have not translated into greater political clout or government funding for Asian social services organizations.
This month’s Social Soju will focus on the 12% and Growing Coalition, a lobby group that was formed in 2008 and unites more than 45 organizations that are led by or serve the Asian community. The Coalition's advocacy focuses on the fact that although Asians make up 13% of the population, we get less than 1% of social service funding.
