Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s famous quotation, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world,” the Be the Change National Day of Service takes place every year on or near Gandhi’s October 2nd birthday.

This year’s Be the Change National Day of Service in Austin will kick off on Saturday, October 1st, with a celebration from 8:30 to 10:00 AM on the south steps of the Texas State Capitol, followed by service projects throughout the rest of the day. Volunteer registration is now available online at http://BeTheChangeAustin.org/.

Additional sites will be added in the coming weeks; proposals for projects should be submitted to Rupal Shah, Be the Change Volunteer Coordinator, at (512) 740-8895 or Volunteer@BeTheChangeAustin.org. We understand that not all projects may be appropriate for all volunteers; if you do not see a project currently listed that fits your needs, please check back again soon. If you have any suggestions or requests for projects to accommodate any specific requirements, we encourage you to let us know at Volunteer@BeTheChangeAustin.org.

There are two options to register:

1. Register as an Individual:

Step 1: Go to www.HandsOnCentralTexas.org
Step 2: Under Menu go to Volunteer Projects
Step 3: Click on Project Calendars
Step 4: Go to October 1, 2011 on the Calendar and register for projects of interest

2. Register as a Team: have one individual create a team on the Hands on Central Texas (HOCT) website and then register your team for a project. To do this you still must have the names/email for each volunteer

Instructions on Creating a Team:

You must have an account with Hands on Central Texas to create a team.

Step 1: Go to www.HandsOnCentralTexas.org
Step 2: Click on Register /Log In (left hand side of the menu)
Step 3: Login (Email address and password)
Step 4: Click on GO (Create a Volunteering Team) (on right hand side of page)
Step 5: On this page: Enter Team Name, Team Description and click on (This team is open to invited members only), Click next
Step 6: Click on Add Team Member (must have name and email address)
