TOURNAMENT RULES - abbreviated version (for full version, message this event)
This is an elimination tournament. All players will play three round-robin games (not playing the same person twice). The top 16 players will advance to the semi-finals. The winners of each of those four games will advance to the finals and vie for the grand prize (see above). The second place players in the semi-final will also advance to play for 5th place overall. Prizes will be awarded to the top 5 players Fun Games Café and Mayfair Games will be offering prizes to all tournament.
The tournament is open to a maximum of 64 players. A knowledge of how to play the basic Settlers of Catan game is required to participate.
The tournament begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27. All players must be registered and present by 11 a.m. or they will forfeit their place in the tournament. (Arrive early on Saturday as there is normally a big crowd and it takes some time to enter the exhibition hall.)
Round 1 will begin promptly at 11:10 a.m. Games normally take 60 minutes or less to play. While there is no time limit, we will encourage slower games to speed up so they do not interfere with the scheduled start time of subsequent rounds.
The round robin will conclude at approximately 3:15 p.m. and the entire tournament will conclude just after 7 p.m. Players must be present two minutes prior to the scheduled start of any round or they will forfeit their place in the tournament.
Rules
While players in this tournament should be familiar with the rules for The Settlers of Catan, occasionally, there will be players who learned the game with house or unofficial rules thrown in, or there will be situations that require interpretation. As this tournament is a sanctioned WWCC PRE-QUALIFIER Event, we will use the most recent ruleset from Mayfair Games (4th edition).
These official rules often come up as points of confusion (some are new for this tournament):
- A “7” moves the robber from the first roll of the game. There is no “grace period” during players’ first turns.
- Players may trade and build in any order, and may do so multiple times in any order.
- Players may use ports (harbours) on the same turn that they are obtained.
- The robber MAY be moved to the desert by a player (new with the 4th edition rules).
Scoring
For World pre-qualifier events, we will utilize the scoring system used in the World Championship event. The order and ranking are based on (by importance):
• Number of wins: Two first-places beats all one first-place players
• Number of points: Sum of victory points across all games
• Percentage of points (PoP): Average percentage of points the person scored in each of their games
The first two are straightforward; the third requires a bit of explanation. Simply put, this rules states that if you win with 10 points, and your three opponents had 6 points each, your PoP (10/28 = 36%) is better than someone whose opponents had 9 points each (10/37 = 27%).
A player wins with 10 points, even if they end up with more actual points. Also note that any victory points from development cards that players have are added onto their final scores whether they win or lose.
All players should write their names and final VP scores on the results sheet, sign it and return it to the Tournament Director immediately following the conclusion of the game.
