Family and friends,
As you may be aware, I have been diligently training for the Portland Marathon on 10/09/11. In addition, I am committed to supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation in raising funds for prostate cancer research.
Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America. Men are 35% more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than women are to be diagnosed with breast cancer. One in six American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and there are over 2 million American men who are currently affected, including my father.
My father, Russ, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in the spring of 2008; a very unsettling time for my family and me. After recovering from various treatments, the outlook for my father is good. When I first found out I was frightened. After learning more about the disease, advances in treatment options, and seeing my father fight through it, I am more at ease. However, without a definitive cure, his cancer could return. I want to do what I can to fight against prostate cancer, and that is why I am dedicating my Portland Marathon fund-raising efforts to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
The Prostate Cancer Foundation is the world’s largest philanthropic source of support for prostate cancer research with a simple, yet urgent goal: to find better treatments and a cure for recurrent prostate cancer. Athletes for a Cure, a program of the Prostate Cancer Foundation, is a new fundraising and awareness program to assist individual athletes in their quest to raise money for better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer.
I am dedicated to this race and hope that you will support me in reaching my fundraising goal.
