About:
The Edible Schoolyard, established in 1995, is a thriving one-acre garden and kitchen classroom at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School. All students participate in garden classes where they are introduced to the origins of food, plant life cycles, community values, and the pleasures of work. Kitchen classes allow them to prepare and eat delicious and nutritious, seasonal dishes made from project they have grown in the garden.
Since 1996, over 3,000 students have graduated from the Edible Schoolyard with the skills and knowledge they need to make lifelong, healthy choices. The Edible Schoolyard hosts over a thousand national and international visitors a year and continues to provide a model for Edible Education.
