Umbrella Arts Gallery owners Margaret Bodell and MaryAnn Fahey will host an open house on 317 East 9th Street, NY, commemorating the Tenth Anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy ALL HANDS, 343 Memorial hand sewn patches- community art project by Peter Yanowitz and will be on view through September 17, 2011 at Umbrella arts 317 East 9th Street, NY.
Conceived of as a way of dealing with grief and loss from the events of 9/11, Yanowitz enlisted his friends, family and a growing number of collaborators to help him create a memorial for firefighters who had tragically given their lives. Peter began this project in response to the surreal feeling living in NYC during the aftermath of the attacks. “I held sewing circles in my apartment to keep myself and friends from freaking out”. The sewing circles became a gathering of multi-media artists from around the city.
