BILL HUGHES (Jazz Guitar): Bill is has been a staple of the Salem jazz scene for a decade now and is known for bringing together some of the finest players that reside and pass through Salem for gigs of tremendous variety and interest, covering all aspects of the jazz spectrum. He’ll play dinner ambiance and join Nathan and Karen in their set.
NATHAN OLSEN (keyboards): Nathan is a top session player who has played with anyone and everyone of note in the area. Adept and expressive, he is a versatile player that can drive home the blues, improvise the jazz, and beat down the funk. Avid hiker and supporter of Community Radio!!
KAREN DUMONT (Bluesy Vocals): After over 15 years in California, Karen is back in her hometown and it isn’t a day too soon. Her voice is powerful, resonating, and she can deliver a song with gusto and style. Look for Blues, Gospel, Soul, Funk and Jazz stylings, backed by a couple of the finest local musicians Salem has to offer!!
All this, and then, the HEADLINER....
I can’t think of a better artist to come perform for KMUZ than Brian Cutean. Brian is one of those fairly local, fairly loco, unique, independent, purely sincere and wildly original performers who can entertain you in so many ways. Listening to Brian is not a passive activity. He comes at you from so many angles that you can’t just sit there and listen.. .you will be compelled to dodge a diatribe, immerse yourself in some excellent guitar, laugh at some absurd wordplay, or realize some complex reality you have always felt but hadn’t quite heard before, and now Brian’s got it in a SONG!! This guy is perceptive, artistic, engaging, challenging, and above all FUN!
I had always heard of Brian, he’s played with, before, or after so many of the artists that have been here at Salem Houses Concerts… Anne Feeney, Jim Page, Beth Wood, Joanne Rand, Chris Chandler, and the list goes on and on. Somehow, I had never actually caught Brian “in the act”.. until one day on a radio interview… I found him to be and extremely compelling personality. As he romps through the interview, and I imagine life, he has a light, impulsive, spontaneous aire about him, but after a while you realize that even when improvising, he is focused and knows exactly where he’s going and how he’ll get there. Sort of a plotted-out chaos of random reasoning, poetry, music, responsiveness, creativity, talent and perspective that only years of experience and abandonment of any fear could create, resulting in an absolutely delightful ride through his (un)consciousness, and after all, what more could we ask for, but to be exposed to the very soul of the artist… always my goal at Salem House Concerts.
For the Station, KMUZ, we are so close we can almost taste it. A few still need to step up to the plate and make sure we can trickle out a signal before this show takes place. I hate to try to quote numbers but we’re around halfway to a 20-25 thousand dollar goal. Immediate needs are to get the pole that will hold our antenna up Whipper Hill and planted and some money to get delivery of the antenna that is being built as you read this, on which a hefty down payment has already been made with community donations. If you can get a 90 foot pole up a curvy road, dig a 20 foot hole, lay a cement pad, build a fence, you can become a crown prince of radioland and trade those skills for underwriting benefits and community praise for helping make a local resource real.
The station has a real organization, a program committee, underwriting committee, active board of directors, mission, hundreds of supporters, and has been gaining lots of momentum over the past year. I believe in the organization, and if the community supports this, it will succeed and become what those who care make it… and if people care, it will be good, locally programmed content of music, networking, and public affairs.
SMALL BUSINESS UNDERWRITERS FOR THIS SHOW ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. You will be ravished with acknowledgement at the show, linked on the KMUZ sponsor/underwriter page, and allowed a dominant visible presence at the Garden … how? Lets discuss the ways!!
OR… you can just come, enjoy the food, the music, the camaraderie, and know that this alone helps inch this little train up Whipper Hill, connect the wires, plug it into something and then you can tune your tuners to 88.50FM.!!
But, please, don’t just take my word for it…..
"Wandering minstrel Cutean is a nimble guitarist and appealing singer whose jaunty folk songs and contemplative ballads are filled with personal reflection, social commentary and pure whimsy..." - Willamette Week
"Brian Cutean sings softly about cerebral things. His introspective folk music follows the traditional minstrel mode of telling stories without judgement, without so much personal doctrine it overburdens the soul...The lyrics reflect his light sense of humor and strong sense of irony. He presents the songs with the hand of subtlety, crafting poetic stories about life, history and natural things..." - The San Marcos Daily Record
"Touching lyrics, smart guitar work and lyrics that reach you deep..." - The Eugene Weekly
"Thought provoking word spinning and finger plucking...a laid back meld of lively lyrics, wacky wordplay and stories from the spaces in his heart...a social commentator in the classic tradition of a bard singing for his bread; a melodious punster who brings grins to his listener's lips and vagrant thoughts to their stirred-up minds..." - The Southeast Examiner
A free ranging mix of folk, jazz, blues and beat and sometimes-relevant, sometimes-irreverent lyrics. It's music that aims to please but doesn't take itself too seriously..." - The Medford Mail Tribune
"Unpretentious, clever, soft, magnanimous with a wry sense of humor and a love of irony..." - Common Ground
"It's the lyrics that will pull you in at first. From wild tales to outright poetry and soul-touching truths, his singing ranges from absurd to inspirational and from tragic to hilarious. It is impossible not to be touched by the passion of Cutean's words. "But the genius of a Brian Cutean performance is his mastery on the guitar. After hearing a set that makes you want to sob and scream all while you have a smile on your face, Cutean will take the stage with an instrumental number that will let your soul run free while your body dances across the room..." - The Tacoma Reporter
