Relational databases continue their reign as the kings of information storage. Yet the database world is experiencing more change now than it has for decades, because these platforms aren't the right answer for many of today's most challenging applications.
In response, an entirely new class of post-relational databases have hit the market. Although there are many examples and implementations of these new solutions, collectively they’re categorized as Big Data/NoSQL. They’re powering some of the largest Web sites out there, such as Facebook, Yahoo, Google, and eBay. They're now beginning to move into corporate environments, too.
