A little about the rain-forests...
Sometimes referred to as 'the lungs of our planet', the Amazon rainforest produces more than 20% of the entire world's oxygen and one fifth of the world's fresh water is in the Amazon Basin.
It soaks in so much carbon dioxide that it currently has the largest influence on global warming. However, containing billions of tons of CO2, every time a tree is cut down a small portion of this is released back into the atmosphere, accelerating the process of global warming.
25% of all pharmaceutical drugs come from plants from the rainforest and 99% of rainforest plants have yet to be tested.
There are plants found only in the rainforest which have the potential to create drugs for treating Cancer, Alzheimer's, AIDs and more.
There are 3,000 plants that are known to have anti-cancer properties, and 70% of these inhabit the rainforest.
About one million people call the Amazon rainforest home. Their ancestors have lived in the Amazon for thousands of years and their survival and the survival of their culture depends on the conservation of the rainforest.
Over 100 pharmaceutical companies as well as the US Government are funding projects studying the bountiful plant and healing knowledge of indigenous people and shamans of the Amazon.
Rain-forests once covered 14% of earth's land surface. Now only covering 6%, over half the world's rain-forests have been destroyed in less than 50 years.
Every second 1.5 acres of rainforest is destroyed and experts believe if the current rate of deforestation continues, all rain-forests will be destroyed in about 40 years.
