On June 2, 2012 51 fellow UT students and I will embark on a 70 day journey to inspire and help those who are fighting cancer or have loved ones who are. How will we do this? My teammates and I will be BIKING over 4,500 miles from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska! We represent the 2012 LIVESTRONG Texas4000 for Cancer Team. Texas4000 is a non-profit organization at the University of Texas at Austin dedicated to spreading Hope, Knowledge, and Charity for those affected by cancer.
This is the longest annual charity bike ride in the world. Each year, since its inception in 2004, a team of students rides to Alaska with one common goal, fighting cancer. The team travels along to separate routes, Coastal and Rockies, in order to reach the most people during our summer journey. Along the way we give presentations spreading knowledge and awareness about how you can help prevent cancer. We also speak to cancer survivors and families who are currently battling cancer to show them that there are others out there fighting with them and for them.
Additionally each rider is required to raise a minimum of $1 for every mile we bike, $4,500 per rider. With a team of 52 this year we will raise at least $234,000, but our team goal is to surpass that and raise $400,000 before we leave. The money we raise goes many organizations that give support to cancer patients and do research into finding a cure. In the organizations history over 2.4 million dollars has been donated to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the leading center for cancer research.
Each rider is responsible for raising $1 for every mile we bike over a course of 4500 miles, for a total of $4500. With your help, I hope to raise more than that. There are many ways you can help:
