The Exploits in New Media & Emerging Technologies course offers step-by-step guidance on how to launch a social media project from scratch. You’ll learn everything from the basics of securing a domain name and using freeware to build your site to shooting and uploading web video; from choosing the right viral video distributor for your project to creating a web advertising campaign to drive traffic to your site in order to generate revenue. The class covers beginning to advanced information and strategies for using Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, Twitter, blogs, crowdfunding, Flickr and mobile technologies.
This class is taught ON-LINE. The instructor is available to hold the first meeting at CDS for those who are local and who may want an opportunity to meet face-to-face. Prior to the class, the instructor will survey students to determine their desire to meet on site for the first class.
Additional Information
• A $20 materials fee is due at the first class.
• Students are expected to work on a class project in support of a local non-profit. The project will allow students to exercise the things that they are learning through the class.
• Please note that the course fee does not include the $100 computer lab fee for students who wish to use the computer lab. There is no computer lab fee if students are meeting virtually.
About Katina Parker
Katina Parker has employed her talents as a filmmaker, photographer, and graphic/web designer for such clients as Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, Cody ChesnuTT, and Saul Williams. She has served as a communications and social media consultant for the Ford Foundation, the Association of Independents in Radio, Southerners on New Ground (SONG), Stone Circles at Stone House and several progressive public media projects. She teaches at the Center for Documentary Studies and with the Community Folklife Documentation Institute.
Through her work, Parker speaks to the multi-dynamic possibilities of technology and media to spark social and cultural change for voices and communities that have traditionally been under-represented in all forms of media.
Parker recently directed “Devil’s Teeth,” a music video for Justin Thomas Robinson, formerly of the Grammy award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops. Previous awards include Best Documentary Honorable Mention for her film Peace Process at the Vibe UrbanWorld Film Festival (
www.facebook.com/peaceprocess). Her exhibition One Million Strong: Photos from the Million Man, Atonement Day, Womens, Youth, Youth Movement, Family, and Millions More Movement Marches will make its debut at the Hayti Heritage Center (Durham, NC) in 2011 (
www.facebook.com/onemillionstrong). Both Parker and her work have been featured in or on NPR, Entertainment Tonight, Essence.com, Vibe.com, Rolling Stone magazine, and The Fader magazine. She previously worked as a media strategist for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Parker received an M.F.A. in film production from the University of Southern California and a B.A. in Speech Communications from Wake Forest University.
