University of San Francisco Hosts 7th Annual Hilltop Cup Boxing Tournament
SAN FRANCISCO — (Sept. 29, 2011) The University of San Francisco (USF) announced today the 7th Annual Hilltop Cup International Boxing Tournament will take place in the Swig Gym at the Koret Health and Recreation Center on Friday, October 21. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and boxing bouts start at 6:30 p.m. The entrance to the gym is on the corner of Stanyan and Turk in San Francisco.
The Hilltop Cup, California's largest boxing event, is comprised of three levels of competition —USF student intramural bouts, intercollegiate competition (featuring student athletes from USF, UC Berkeley, Stanford, San Jose State, UC Davis, USC, UCLA, and University of Nevada-Reno), and feature bouts showcasing premier boxers from the USA Olympic Team, The Philippine National Team, and the winner of the 2011 Adidas National Championships.
“The Hilltop Cup at the University of San Francisco is unique because it was the vision of USF student and evolved over the years into one of the major amateur boxing events in the greater Bay Area,” said Chuck White, director of recreational sports at USF. “Bringing together a diverse group of athletes to compete and contribute to the greater cause of providing assistance to those in need embodies the spirit of USF. Now in its seventh year, this tournament has built a great reputation for quality boxing in a family-friendly setting. We are excited to welcome the entire community on October 21.”
“We look forward to top caliber boxing athletes at this year’s Hilltop Cup,” said Angelo Merino, head boxing coach and adjunct professor in the Yuchengco Philippine Studies and Asian Studies Programs at the University of San Francisco. “Having members of the USA Olympic Team, The Philippine National Team, and the USA Junior Olympic Team really raises the level of competition and excitement. They not only provide our student athletes with a glimpse of the next level, they also keep boxing alive and well in the Bay Area. Hilltop Cup VII will be an evening for boxing fans, as well as newcomers to boxing who will see boxing as a terrific spectator sport.”
Proceeds from this dynamic night of boxing competition will benefit USF’s Saber Es Poder scholarship fund, which assists deserving, low-income Latino students at USF in their pursuit of higher education. Funds from the event will also benefit the West Bay Pilipino Multi-Service Center, the oldest Filipino non-profit in Northern California. West Bay serves the Filipino community and other ethnic groups in the areas of health, employment, housing, and after-school care. USF has a long-standing relationship with West Bay—partnering in service-learning and advocacy work to help new, at-risk immigrants for more than a decade.
