Singer, Songwriter Katya Chorover on PNW Tour With New Twang-Infused Album, Big Big Love
PORTLAND, Ore. — After establishing herself in the Northwest music scene in the 1990s, singer/ songwriter Katya Chorover moved from Seattle to southwestern Colorado in 2006. She has been performing and teaching, but taking a break from recording and touring, until now. Earlier this year, she returned to the Northwest to record her new album, Big Big Love at Secret Society Studios in Portland. The album was co-produced by veteran Northwest musician Casey Neill and features several members of Neill's band the Norway Rats. Chorover describes the recording process as "a crazy, joyful pleasure. Casey, my dear friend, and fearless co-producer, assembled a stellar crew who couldn't have been more talented or kind, and the studio, with its boozy spirits of old, couldn’t have been more conducive to creativity!.”
The Durango Herald has described Big Big Love as “influenced by classic American country and folk, old Irish tunes, and Brit-folk. Her sound, to these ears, is genuinely reminiscent of early Emmylou Harris.” Buzz is building around the new album, and further comparisons have been made to Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, and Iris DiMent. “Since having a child, and moving to the rural Southwest, my life has slowed, and changed immeasurably. Continuing to be creative has been a challenge, but also has become somehow richer and even more pleasurable,” said Chorover. “These are songs about life, and all its myriad cycles, that come directly from this southwestern land, and from the thirst I have for other places.”
