Takashi Murakami
Galerie Perrotin is pleased to announce the exhibition by Takashi Murakami «Homage to Yves Klein» from 20 October 2011 to 7 January 2012.
Takashi Murakami is confronting himself to Yves Klein’s work by making his own monochromes keeping the same sizes as the original ones. 11 paintings, 9 of which have been created for the show, and one relief will be presented. They will be related directly to Klein’s originals, 3 small monochromes will be shown at the gallery for this occasion («Untitled Blue Monochrome (IKB 67)», «Untitled Monogold (MG 8)», «Untitled Pink Monochrome (MP19)» and 3 sponge reliefs). Both those artists have made the pursuit of the Absolute and perfection the focal point of their work.
Already, in 1991, Takashi Murakami painted monochromes which evoked Klein’s research («Azure»). In 1995, he made a silver and gold-leafed triptych which, in echo to Klein monochromes, evoke the wonderful backgrounds of traditional Japanese art. In 2006, after applying the imprint of his body on the canvas, like anthropométries, he covered it with mesmerizing and energizing colored squares («Acupuncture Paintings»).
Through Monochromes, Takashi Murakami is also taking up the time-old theme of Vanities with accumulation of skulls of flowers, dizzying infinity where the pattern fades away because of its very own abstract repetition ; «MGST, 1962->2011» ; «MCBST, 1959->2011» ; «MCRST, 1962->2011», etc.
A Doctor in Nihonga painting from the University of Arts in Tokyo, Takashi Murakami developed a unique protean style of the most modern techniques associated with the precision and virtuosity of traditional Japanese art and that of the Ukiyo-e engraving (pictures of the floating world) in particular. Inspired by Manga and Kawai (cuteness) culture, his irresistible world is peopled by monstrous and charming characters, facetious descendents of past myths. His theory of the Superflat aesthetic, which he introduced in 2001, attempts to blur the frontiers between popular art and grand art. The absence of perspective, the two-dimensionality of ancient art, filters in to every support – painting, sculpture, prints/silk-screens, wallpaper, animation films and accessories.

Takashi Murakami se confronte à l’oeuvre de Yves Klein en s’emparant de certaines de ses peintures dont il a conservé les formats originels (11 peintures dont 9 inédites de Takashi Murakami ainsi que 6 oeuvres de Yves Klein seront visibles, «Monochrome bleu sans titre (IKB 67)», «Monogold sans titre (MG 8)», «Monochrome rose sans titre (MP19)» et 3 reliefs éponges). Une certaine quête d’absolu et de perfection réunit les deux artistes. Déjà en 1991, Murakami peint des monochromes rappelant les recherches de Yves Klein («Azure»). En 1995, il réalise un triptyque de feuilles d’or et d’argent sur bois («Rose II») évoquant tels les monochromes de Yves Klein, les fonds fabuleux de la tradition picturale au Japon. En 2006, il dissimule l’empreinte de son corps sur la toile - à la manière des anthropométries - par des carrés de couleur hypnotiques et ‘énergétiques’ («Acupuncture Paintings»).
Murakami réinterprète ici l’art des vanités à travers des accumulations de crânes ou de fleurs, vertiges de l’infini où le motif semble disparaître/s’effacer à travers sa propre répétition abstractisante ; «MGST, 1962->2011» ; «MCBST, 1959->2011» ; «MCRST, 1962->2011», etc.
Docteur en peinture Nihonga de l’Université des Arts de Tokyo, Takashi Murakami développe un style unique et une oeuvre protéiforme aux techniques les plus modernes associées à la précision et la virtuosité de l’art traditionnel japonais, celui de l’estampe ukiyo-e (monde flottant) en particulier. Inspiré de la culture manga et kawaï (mignon), son monde irrésistible est peuplé de personnages monstrueux ou charmants, descendants facétieux des mythes passés. L’esthétique Superflat, qu’il a théorisée en 2001, tente de brouiller les frontières entre art populaire et grand art.
L’absence de perspective, la bi-dimensionnalité de l’art ancien s’infiltrent sur tous les supports, peinture, sculpture, prints/sérigraphies, wallpaper, films d’animation, accessoires.
