The re-boot of St. David's Film Night starts with an introduction to the films of Andrei Tarkovsky, viewing part of his masterpiece Andrei Rublev. There will be discussion, wine, finger foods and other such accoutrements as to make us all feel right and properly intellectual.
We won't attempt the full Rublev experience, as it's far too long, but we will look at the last vignette, The Bell, one of the most gorgeous and moving pieces of film in cinema history. We'll provide an introductory discussion, looking at both Tarkovsky and Rublev as parallel figures struggling with faith and art in the face of a difficult and troubling age.
If you haven't seen Andrei Rublev, this would be a great time to engage one of the most important filmmakers of the 20th century, in the perfect setting for such a film: the beautiful Parish of St. David of Wales.
Next up in November: Robert Bresson
