The 9th annual Jill Ackhurst Community Welcome Dinner is coming!!
I am looking for volunteers, who are enthusiastic and excited
to share their passion of Whistler, and act as Table Hosts for the new
batch of seasonal workers at this year’s dinner.
It's $5 for a very scrumptious dinner prepared by local chefs using local ingredients. Many of you come back year after year and are familiar with how the event works. Each table will have 2 Whistler hosts (or a host family) sitting with 6 new Whistler residents for
dinner. As a table host, you will talk with young adults and share your
Whistler experiences and insights with them. You should be passionate about Whistler, and want to share that passion with others. The objective of the dinner is to make newcomers feel valued and welcomed into their new community.
One of these exceptional locals was the late Jill Ackhurst. It was Jill’s
idea to have an annual ‘welcome to the community’ dinner for the new workers arriving in the fall. Jill noticed that many young employees did not know that there was a real community of local people in Whistler. She thought that it was important that the young workers were met and welcomed by community members, to show them that there actually was a Mayor, a Police chief, business owners, retired people, social workers, and real families living in Whistler. Jill was a wonderful person who worked tirelessly for her community, and her community was the entire world. In 2003, Jill died of
cancer at the age of 57 years old. The world lost a wonderful person. The Jill Ackhurst Community Welcome Dinner, is chance to continue that inspiration and legacy that Jill left, as well as honouring and remembering her community spirit, her joy of life, and the memory of her.
If you’d like to host a table please select "attending" for this event or email me at welcomeweekdinner@mywcss.org !
If you're not interested in being a table host, but would still like to be
involved, we will also be recruiting volunteers to help during dinner to run dishes to the kitchen, wash dishes in the industrial washer and re-fill water jugs, and after dinner for tear-down and clean-up. These volunteers will be able to eat dinner for free!
Please forward this event on to anyone who you think may be interested in participating in this unique annual Whistler event. This event sells out every year, so confirm by November 1st to guarantee that you are part of this great dinner and to secure a table to host.
Thank you all for your amazing community spirit! I hope to see you at this year's Jill Ackhurst Community Welcome Dinner.
