Ladies and Gentleman,
So as we all know, nothing beats a good day party, with some classic games, and a name on it; especially when there’s money on the line. Tastes like college…and for most of us, college ‘wasn’t a bad time’. Therefore, the time has come to announce the first annual, Indian Summer Beer Olympics. If you haven’t had the privilege of hearing of such an event, please, take a second to read this…
I don’t want to ramble on with rules, details for the event, or witty email remarks, so I’m gonna try to fill you in the best I can, in as short as I can, and, well all you really need to do is show up (and of course maybe practice a bit).
Here we go.
The Basics: We are going to be having the Olympics on Saturday, November 12th, at 1:00 p.m. at my place, 408 Clayton Street in the Haight. It’s very important that everyone shows up on time, so maybe coming around noon wouldn’t be a bad idea. It will mostly be played in the back yard, although we are going to have one or two of the events across the street in the panhandle. Entry costs are $20 per person. This will include a ridiculous amount of beer for the day, some food to help out the drinking, and of course the main prizes of around $700 in prize money, depending on the turnout. We would like to shoot for around 20 teams (although I foresee the number being a bit larger, and will probably have to put a limit on the number of teams), and award the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams. If 20 teams show up the prize money would be around :
1st Place- $400
2nd Place- $200
3rd Place-$60 (or basically get to rage for free all day)
So as you can see, besides it probably being one of the best drinking days, there is something a bit more on the line. If you have plans that day - cancel them.
Your Team: Each team will consist of 3 players. One of which has to be a girl. If you’re a team of all guys, you can swing it, but you will be penalized in each of the games, if you don’t have at least one girl on the team (and yes, you can have a team of all girls…in fact, we would encourage it-no, you will not be penalized). For only 2 of the events, you will be using all 3 members (flip cup and quarters). For the other 3 events, you will decide on 2 of your team members to participate in. YOU CAN NOT HAVE THE SAME COMBINATION OF TEAM MEMBERS IN ANY OF THESE 3 EVENTS (that is if Mel and Tommy play beer pong, Mel and Tommy cannot play cornhole together, it must be Mel and Sara, or Tommy and Sara…and so on and so forth). Once you have selected who is going to play, you cannot switch out players. SO, for some of you who need a spark notes version of this rule, one team member will be sitting out for one of the 5 events.
Scoring & The ‘Games’: For most of the events of the tournament, it will be a ‘blind draw’ (meaning your team will be playing other random teams), in a double elimination format. You will get points, in correspondence with how deep into the rounds your team makes it. All you need to know, is if you keep winning, you will get the most points-but if you lose TWICE in any of the games, you will be eliminated (and your team won’t get many points). This is going to be for the quicker games- pong, quarters, and flip cup.
For cornhole and snappa, seeing how these games can tend to take a bit longer, it will be a SINGLE elimination tournament (just like march madness-‘one and done’). Again, you will get points if you continue to advance in games.
As stated earlier, there will be 5 games. Flip Cup, Beer Pong, Quarters, Cornhole, and Snappa. If there are any ties in any of the games, they will be decided with a 1 beer chug off.
Most of us know how to play each of these games; however, some of you may not know how to play ‘Snappa’, and, well…learn. It’s a die game, that basically involves throwing a die up in the air, catching it, and drinking…a lot. If you want to know more about it, ask someone who’s played it, or check out
www.playsnappa.com
For beer pong, it will be a standard 15 cup game, with 2 re-racks. None of this weird your on fire rules, or behind the back throws. Just basic beer pong, with a rebuttal. You will get points as you progress through the rounds.
For flip cup, all 3 team members will play, with the respective team on one side and vise versa. Each team member will flip a total of 2 CUPS. That way, people have to demonstrate some skill and not just get lucky and flip 1 cup over. For flip cup, it will be the best 2 out of 3 games, and then your team will advance to the next round.
For quarters, we may leave it a mystery as to what game we are playing. All you need to know, is it will involve the basics of a quarter game. Possibly a form of ‘anchorman’ or speed quarters. Just know it will be your team vs. another team, and the winner will advance.
Cornhole (or the ‘bean bag game’) should be self explanatory. Again, if you don’t know how to play this, ask someone or look it up.
Costumes aren’t mandatory, but a little bit of team camaraderie/buffoonery is certainly recommended. I mean, it is right after Halloween…
Congrats! You just read probably more than you’ve read all day. So get your team, commit, and you can either pay on the actual day of the Olympics, or give me (or the roomies-Jaime or Ian) money ahead of time. I need team members and team name by Nov. 5th.
Get excited people…
