Friendly Fires
Say hello to Friendly Fires, born of commuter belt boredom, now one of the most exciting new bands in the country. Last year, a super limited seven-inch, Paris, was judged to be the single of the week in both the NME and The Guardian. They were the first unsigned band to appear on Channel 4’s Transmission show. Radio 1 DJs Zane Lowe, Colin Murray and Rob Da Bank are fans. Now signed to XL, they count Radiohead, The White Stripes and Adele as their labelmates.
Theophilus London
Theophilus London is a rapper, songwriter and producer from Brooklyn. Fader magazine places him at the center of the borough’s new urban-pop movement, while UK music weekly NME goes in a bit further: ”... his patter is sumptuous, his look untouchable, his soundscapes plucked from mythical ghetto neverlands … he’s the real deal.” His first mixtape, JAM!, was a buzzy DIY effort that tipped off early adopters in the underground, but it was the independent release of This Charming Mixtape via his brand the Lovers in early 2009 that introduced London’s voracious pop appetite and minted him as an artist to watch beyond mere hype. Gliding effortlessly from clubby original productions to 90s rave throwbacks, afropop electrojams, Kraftwerk samples, a backbreaking bass refix of a Whitney Houston torch song—all of it stitched together with London’s breathy, unpredictable flow—This Charming Mixtape’s wildfire appeal soon saw London igniting clubs in Europe and America with stunning live performances. It’s possible this is the arrival of a once-in-a-generation talent: Theophilus London is very much in this moment but not of it. He is currently at work on his debut album.
Chad Valley
Chad Valley are the personal outpourings of one Hugo Manuel, the balearic inclined vocalist of Oxford's Jonquil and founder member of the Blessing Force collective.
Taking a more electronic approach to sunset vibes, Hugo has made quite a splash this past summer. In his short 25 show career he's already played in Dublin, Paris, Budapest, Belgrade and Istanbul, been a big smash at In The City and supported the likes of Amiina, Mountain Goats and Foals. His music has been on every blog you can think of from Gorilla vs. Bear to Pitchfork's Forkcast, the latter of which has featured him three times in recent months and at one point in late October was the fourth most blogged about artist on the planet.
He's enjoyed a host of radio plays across the BBC and had his debut BBC session recorded for Huw Stephens' show in January 2011.
Chad Valley's debut EP is out on Service's US imprint Cascine (USA / UK / JP / Scan) and French label Maman (EU) and a follow up is slated for release this coming Spring in UK, US and Japan.
