1990 Caretta "Poderi Cannubi", Barolo: "The marvelous 1990 Barolo is made in a traditional, robust, tannic yet super-rich style. It emanates from the highly regarded Cannubi vineyard. It is larger-scaled than the 1989 Barolo Cannubi (and that's saying something), with explosive levels of extract, tannin, glycerin, body, and alcohol. Although it must have 14.5% - 15% alcohol, there is no noticeable hotness because of the wine's sheer concentration. This extroverted, macho, beefy Barolo should be drunk between 1998-2015. This wine is unequivocally from the traditional school of Piedmontese winemaking. Its rustic side, evidenced by huge quantities of ferocious tannin, is accompanied by deep, full-bodied, concentrated wine with layers of pure, ripe fruit. Impressive!" (92/100, Robert Parker)
1997 Massolino "Vigna Rionda - Reserva", Barolo: "The 1997 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is a beautiful wine to enjoy today, as it is just entering the early part of its drinking window. Made in the sweet, expansive style that is typical of the vintage, it reveals ripe fruit, leather, earthiness, menthol, smoke and roasted coffee beans, with superb concentration allied to structure. Anticipated maturity: now-2017.
" (93/100, Robert Parker, Oct 2007) "Deep ruby garnet. Plum, roses and tar on the nose. Full-bodied, with loads of fruit and a velvety texture. Plum, coffee and vanilla bean character. Very long." (96/100, Wine Spectator)
2005 Ratti "Marcenasco", Barolo: "Marcenasco really comes through this vintage in terms of power, elegance and harmony. There are spice and herbal notes mixed in with almond, vanilla and allspice. Youll love the sensation of wholeness and harmony here. Drink this opulent wine with filet mignon with wild mushroom cream sauce." (93/100, Wine Enthusiast) "This fabulous Nebbiolo displays aromas of very ripe strawberry and cappuccino. Full-bodied, with supervelvety tannins and incredible concentration. All the tannins are coated with gorgeous fruit." (96/100, Wine Spectator, and #7 on their Top 100 Wines of 2009)
2005 Monti, Barolo: "Big time black cherry and herbal cola aromas persistently attack the nose and a solid wave of dusty but sweet red plum and mega doses of black pepper flavors combines on the palate to deliver a well balanced and picture perfect effort. A long spicy finish will seemless tannins shows me this will be a humdinger in 5-8 years. Well done. Watermelon, cherry, and roses on the palate." (Italianwinereport.com)
2005 Monti "Bussia", Barolo: "An opulent yet focused nose of cranberry and tar hints at greatness but its all business in the mouth. A laser guided missile of red apple, tobacco, and rose peta il extract shoot through the mouth leaving a long trail the whole way through. Floral in style you think elegance until the underlying power of Monforte shows you what its all about. Stunningly complex for a young nebbiolo this will be great in a few years. Long finish that is just begging for ossobucco to challenge it." (Italianwinereport.com) "A touch closed, but with a lovely aroma and a long, pleasing fruit-and-tobacco finish, all of which augurs very well. Drink 2010-2020." (4 stars, Decanter)
