Dear friends,
You may remember that a little while ago I was lucky enough to be selected as a member of the 3 Peaks 3 Weeks 2012 team - and as time is flying and January 2012 is very quickly approaching, I thought I'd give you an update as to the progress of the 3 Peaks 3 Peaks 2012 challenge.
The challenge is fairly straight forward: myself and 10 other women from around the world will climb 3 of Africa’s highest mountains in less than 3 weeks, to raise money and awareness for the 3 peak issues facing East Africa today; education, environmental conservation, and HIV/AIDS.
All the money we raise will go towards 3 grassroots organisations in Kenya and Tanzania, who are already making positive differences within their local communities, and are influencing the broader national community in the areas of education, environmental conservation and HIV/AIDS healthcare. Fortunately, the 3 Peaks 3 Weeks teams have the opportunity to spend a day with each of the 3 organisations on the days in between our climbs, to see how each organisation is run. We get to meet children who have been given an amazing educational opportunity at the School of St Judes, people afflicted with AIDS whose lives are being improved through the healthcare of Support for International Change, and the workers of the Laikipia Wildlife Forum who manage the conservation of a threatened ecosystem.
As you may know, I'm a fairly active person (possibly somewhat of an understatement, haha) but I've never actually climbed mountains this high - so the looming peaks are going to be a real physical challenge! My training is already well underway (in the form of hiking, rock climbing, cycling, running and gym work) but with only two months remaining before we commence the trek up Mt Kenya (approx. 5000m), Mt Meru (4500m) and Mt Kilimanjaro (5900m), I'm now buckling down and getting really serious about preparing for the physical challenge to come.
I also need to get into some serious fundraising! My amount raised so far is AU$4821 - an amount that I'm so incredibly proud of already. For those of you who attended the A-Z Cabaret or may have already donated – thank you so much! I would really love to raise this to $6,000, or even $10,000. As I mentioned before, 100% of the money being fundraised goes directly to the 3 charities in Kenya and Tanzania, as each of the climbers have to pay their own way to participate in the trek and support the administration of 3 Peaks 3 Weeks.
So the time has come for me to ask you to please consider donating to this very worthwhile cause. Most of us are in the fortunate position where we can donate money here and there, without it making a huge difference to us. However, a small amount of money can go a long way in Africa, especially if we are all able to give a small amount. If each of my friends here on Facebook were to donate just $5, that would make over $2000 worth of difference in the lives of people with less opportunities than ourselves. Imagine if we could all give $10, or $20…
