Light the Night is an annual event run by a collection of student staff at the Department of Student Housing and Residence Life at UTM. The goal of the event is to raise awareness against violence; focusing specifically on person based forms of violence (including sexual assault) and discrimination / bullying. The Light the Night initiative includes two distinct parts. The first is a weeklong advertising strategy (that takes place in our main residence building) in which we set up a table to answer questions that students may have, spread awareness and collect donations. All of the donations collected from the event each year go to a specific charity or non-profit organization. This year we have chosen LOVE (Leave Out Violence -
http://leaveoutviolence.org/ontario/about-us/) which is a Canadian organization that aims to “reduce violence in the lives of youth and in our communities by building a team of young leaders who communicate a message of non-violence”. The second part includes the actual “light the night” event in which students, staff and faculty come together to show their support and their commitment to advocating the end of violence in their communities. This usually includes a student made video, a speaker, and a candlelit walk around campus.
