Designer Whitney Larkin launches her eponymous jewelry line WHITNEY LARKIN with a cocktail reception, short film, and musical performance. Mirrors by Moza, curated by Anne Huntington, is pleased to host the event.
Whitney Larkin’s collection is inspired by the brilliance of the world under the sea in competition with an ever encroaching human influence. Cultured pearls are juxtaposed against chains hand-woven from industrial materials. Fluorescent fishing lures mimic the acid tone hues of tropical fish. The effect is an avant- garde clash of the natural and humane.
Whitney has close ties to the art world, and the launch marks the debut of Picnic-by-the-Sea, a short film directed by artist Wilmot Kidd and starring singer-performer Valerie Geffner and artist Joey Frank. Focusing on the themes of aging, beauty, and death, the film is projected on a loop in the gallery, and features fashion and jewelry created by Whitney. The film was produced with the assistance of Charlotte Kidd and Gabriel Florenz.
Valerie Geffner is performing her original songs and experimental vocals intermittently throughout the reception. Her latest album, Antenna, has been compared to being inside a Van Gogh painting.
A graduate of the Parsons School of Design, Whitney has held positions at design houses United Bamboo and Ruffian and served as style editor for Aspen Magazine. She considers style icons Iris Apfel and Little Edie Beale as significant influences for her work, which also finds inspiration in her childhood in coastal Florida. Each piece in Whitney’s collection is handmade and many utilize vintage carved ivory and foraged sea glass, collected by Whitney. Pearls are a dominant theme of her work.
Mirrors by Moza is a solo exhibition by the Mexican artist Moza Saracho, exploring the visible and invisible through a collection of large-scale conceptual mirrored works in five parts — Truth, Destiny, Vanity, Existence and Moment.
