Originally from Vonijama on the Liberia Guinea border, Bintu began dancing at the age of 5 under the tutelage of Fatmata Mansary, her grandmother and a Djeli (storyteller), in storytelling and traditional West African Dance forms. She currently serves Co-Artistic Director of The Jaara Dance Project and performs with the Diamano Coura West African Drum and Dance Company in Oakland. She believes in using the arts as a means of self-expression, empowerment and ultimately to heal.
