The debut LP, Dxys Xff, from the odd Miami solo act Teams (Sean Bowie), extends a gratis glimpse into a spectral psyche brimming with brittle electro beats. Teams offers everything from pscyh-crazy jolts on “Stunts” to carnal lo-fi R&B grinds on “Lxv Spxll.” Dxys Xff thrives on the paradoxical union of jagged and sensual rhythms, brought to their apex on “Based Love.” “The Only One” temporarily takes the rapture down a few notches to make room for Bobbi Dahl’s ice cold expressions. Teams is killing it in 2011, with a Star Slinger collaborative effort already out earlier this year. Teams, aka Sean Bowie, at Check Yo Ponytail, was a tsunami of brilliance. I couldn’t help but splash my feet about to the eclectic textures of his submerged disco trill funk. Don’t get me wrong: Dxys Xff isn’t some languorous chill-out record. There’s a largeness to these tracks, a real imposing skyscraper sort of thing, and you’ll feel small, hypnotized, in the shadow. Chilled out by way of relative enormity. The way Teams forges beats and melody, seemingly from thin air and big blue sky, is imposing enough; a glitch here, a sample there, clicks and clatters melting together in one seamless piece.
