"Music From/For Saharan Cellphones" vinyl release party!
In the Northern Malian town of Kidal, cellphones are used as all-purpose multimedia devices. Cellphones house portable music collections, playback songs on tiny built-in speakers, and swap files through peer-to-peer Bluetooth wireless transfer.
In 2010, Sahelsounds collected cellphone jams ranging from DIY Tuareg guitar, auto-tuned Moroccan chaabi, Malian coupé décalé, and fruityloop hip hop.
A year or so later, Boomarm presented “Music For Saharan Cellphones”. Drawing on gifted producers and musicians from a variety of stylistic backgrounds and nationalities, track were selected and re-interpreted a musical moment from the source material. From bass laden sound/clash ventures, abstract re-creations, and even an amazing autotune cover, the end result holds a rich assortment of well informed musical statements.
On December 2nd, Sahelsounds is offering up an LP of "Music from Saharan Cellphones", drawing on source material from the first two cassettes, as well as a collaborative 7" with Boomarm Nation featuring Mdou Moctar's Tuareg Autotune love song with Gull's bass heavy futuristic remix on the flip.
We gather to celebrate this music at Moloko on Friday December 2nds at 10 pm. Free!!!
Sounds by Sahelsounds, Gulls, Dr. Peepers & Monkeytek!
