An Introduction to Venture Capital

Venture capital (VC) is financial capital provided to early-stage, high-potential and high-growth startup companies. This workshop aims to cover the following three topics:
1) An introduction to the VC industry and other related players such as angel investors, entrepreneurs, and private equity firms
2) Understanding term sheets
3) Raising funds from VCs and angel investors

Dinner will be provided. You will be given a set of workshop materials at the event, so please register at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dDBrWU9UUEJweUlYOFFiQkpZcTJia1E6MQ to help us estimate how many sets of materials we should be preparing.

Workshop lecturers:

Thomas Stevens (Principal at Stevens and Associates and board member of The Chicago Lean Startup Circle)

Tom is principal of the lawfirm Stevens & Associates, a successor to the firm he founded in 1989. He is an English solicitor and an American attorney. His focus is upon finance, mergers and acquisitions, entity structuring and governance, tax planning, international transactions, and best practices analyses.

He is an avid supporter of young entrepreneurs, providing mentoring at waived costs and fees He serves on the Board of The Chicago Lean Startup Circle, a non-profit group approaching 1,000 members He regularly speaks on issues pertaining to startup companies, law, and entrepreneurial skills, and maintains a blog at www.startup-trebuchet.com.

Lev Slavin (Startup consultant)
Lev focuses on helping entrepreneurs launch profitable, impactful companies that will create positive change in the world. He holds an MBA (cum laude) from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, with concentrations in Entrepreneurship, Strategic Management, General Management, Economics, and Organizational Behavior. His experience spans 8 years of market/competitive research and financial modeling in the corporate sector, and 2 years of advising social entrepreneurs and start-ups in industries ranging from manufacturing to high tech to business services. Lev applies his expertise as a systems thinker, market researcher, and financial modeler to design business models, develop growth strategies, and help entrepreneurs position their businesses for investment.
