Donna De Lory is one of the finest singer/ songwriters in the realm of spiritual pop music with a voice that is unparalleled in its versatility and emotional expression. Her voice and sound seem to transcend time and genre.
Donna DeLory’s latest CD is much more than a batch of studio dance remixes. It may very well be her best production to date, and closely approximates what her live shows have evolved into. “Remixes” is totally listenable and brings fully to light her unparalleled voice, canvassed over a deeply satisfying range of textures, tempos and tantalizing touches. Eleven unique tracks create an enticing collection of remixes, drawn from the albums "The Lover and the Beloved", "Sky Is Open", and "Sanctuary", with songs of consciousness and devotion set to rhythmic dance beats and subtle electronica textures.
De Lory has crafted expressive, spiritually-charged albums that embrace both her passionate exploration of yoga and meditation-inspired music. Her five solo recordings blend various aspects of world music into shimmering pop landscapes, which also cross over into the emerging realm of chant/kirtan releases, where she feels equally at home. Above all, it is Donna’s voice, fiery and passionate, yet with a childlike innocence, that reaches people.
Donna says, "I am focusing on creating more rhythmic music now,” she says, "I feel that people want to come together in community, to sing and dance and get back to their hearts. Music has the great power to awaken, heal and transcend. I feel so grateful to have this music and sacred song to give. Playing music is my yoga, this is my bliss. When I play, I get lost in the music, my mind stops, I am in the moment and I am free. This is a place I never want to leave."
"Donna rocks us again with the divine elixir of her extraordinary voice remixed with new music alchemy for yoga, dance, and making love to life." -- Shiva Rea, Yogini
In the rarified realm of devotional music artists, Donna De Lory is unique. She continually takes her music to a new level: danceable, incredible, sacred, sassy and powerfully personal. Blending Eastern and Western influences rather than purely exploring ancient mantras like other musicians, she creates beguiling original compositions that blend English verses with choruses of Sanskrit mantras, in her unparalleled voice, while often infusing chill beats and subtle electronica textures. This particularly unique art, of her own design, is taken to new heights on her current CD “Remixes”. Remixers include Rara Avis, Mac Quayle, Desert Dwellers, Eastern Sun, Dave Dale and Atom Smith. The voice of Krishna Das and Dave Stringer are heard on various songs. Two versions of “Om Namah Shivaya” are quite different; the second one segues beautifully into “The Will Be Done”. “Hey Ma Durga” shines like the sun, and “Jai Ma” honors the Divine Mother in all Her forms. Several pieces include Donna singing layered harmonies with herself, and adding the many magical elements she brings to her concerts. Favorite tracks such as “In the Sun” and “Sanctuary” are soaring examples of the way she takes the listener through both expansive and inward spaces that illumine the experience and open hearts in new ways.
Donna's soulful voice is unlike any other in today's realm of pop or sacred world music artists. A devoted student of yoga and spiritual teachings, De Lory's lushly conceived solo albums, like her “Best of the Year” 2009 ecstatic groove “Sanctuary,” are not only inspired by Western pop, but Indian devotional music, Sanskrit mantras, Northern African grooves, psychedelic arrangements, and dance beats. Donna blends her rich spiritual practice, sonic collages and diverse musical inspirations into a unique, world music-meets-kirtan style that's been called "the perfect combination of earth Mama and fairy child, with a voice that oscillates between the passionate laments of Janis Joplin and the crystal clarity of Enya."
De Lory recently played two dates on the 2010 Lilith Fair Tour. "It was really amazing," she says, "Most of the artists were pop-rock on the bill, so it was interesting for me, being the world music, devotional person. I did songs in English and Sanskrit and it came off great. People are so open to diversity at these festivals." Now completely focused on her own career, De Lory previously devoted 20 years to recording and touring with Madonna, as one of her two primary backing singers and dancers. She sang on hit albums like "Ray of Light" and "Like a Prayer," and Madonna even sang backing vocals on her debut album “Bliss”. At her last show with the superstar in 2007, De Lory sang before 70,000 fans at the London Live Earth concert. Music has always been a catalyst in De Lory’s life. "Music connects me to the divine. Playing music is my yoga, it is my bliss. When I play, I get lost in the music, my mind stops, I am in the moment and I am free. This is a place I never want to leave."
