Get to know DJ Exceed: Q&A
Where do you live and how would you describe the scene there? I live in Austin Tx. Was born in Houston and grew up in Dallas, then moved to Austin when I was 16. When I first moved here the scene was very ravey; fat ufo pants and visors amongst the crowd while high energy trance and uk hardhouse was the dominant sound in warehouses and a few bars in the downtown area. Then it went we had a death in the scene causing many venues to stop hosting electronic dance music events which brings us the the drum n bass era in Austin. It was a dark time ravers traded in there glow sticks for camo gear and started talking with a British accent… Fast forward a few years the clubs started hosting events again and electronic dance music was back in full swing only this time it was different, electro was all the craze and most recently with the return of massive music festivals in Texas, dubstep has taken the reigns and is exciting to see both new and old listeners get into the vibe have an open ear to the new/post/future sounds that is constantly evolving.
How has this influenced your style? I think all of it has influenced and molded me into who I am today. Music is like fashion its constantly changing, evolving. You don’t want to be to caught up in one style of music because tomorrow, it could be yesterday’s news.
How would you describe your sound? I would like for everyone to know I do not want to be labeled as a producer of a specific genre more of just an electronic music producer. I like to make the music I hear in my head and sometimes I don’t event know what to call it. All I do know is that I can tell you its usually lined up with fat bass sounds and thick, crunchy drums and the atmospheric vibe that will take you up and down the the emotional roller coaster we all love to ride!
What do you love about performing and what are your favorite gigs? I love getting my point across. Changing peoples lives and helping create a memory they will never forget for the rest of their lives. That moment when everyone is clapping to the beat on a breakdown or when people are dancing like no one is watching, the release that the music gives you and the trust the crowd gives back to me while taking them on a journey through sound.
How did you come up with your name? I always laugh when I get this question… I was up late one night/early morning after a party with some friends reading random definitions through a webster’s dictionary out loud and when I came across the word Exceed it was most fitting for my DJ name at the time and stuck with it ever since.
What is your fav artists to listen to while driving? I listed a few of my favorite/influential DJ’s above but right now while I’m on the road if its not a local dj mix I have been jammin a lot of Trowa’s tunes. Those guys production are on point.
Over the years what progression of dance music genres have you fallen in love with to bring you to where you are now? I love how electronic music has been going lately and I am very excited to see what turns and flips it will take next! The best part I have been able to witness recently is the unity in people who listen to music with an opened mind. None if this genre wars non sense the used to be all the talk back in the day… JUNGLIST FOREVER or HOUSE MUSIC UNTIL I DIE. Its music, listen to it to guide your soul and it will do no wrong.
Who would you say are your major influences? I have always been influences by the dj’s who entertain the most during a live performance. Don’t get me wrong I dig a phenomenal producer as much as the next but if there isn’t something worth watching while they play it live it looses my attention easily. Donald Glaude was the first hype DJ I saw play back in 02 (I think) and it changed the way I watched DJ’s and honestly raised the bar in my opinion for live performance. Craze, Bad Boy BIll, Rusko,12th Planet and most recently Skrillex has caught my attention.
How did you get into making music? I got into making music at a very early age playing a video game on playstation although I didn’t have the knowledge that I was producing then lol. I think I was about 17 I bought acid pro to start recording my dj mixes and working with loops. Later in my 20′s I had a friend show me the basics of ableton and have been learning to master that software ever since.
What do you use to make music? I use Ableton Live 8, Native instruments: Massive & Razor and a Akai Mpk 49.
What process do you go thru to make a track? I usually start out with the drums and sort out a template of the song, from there I start working on the bassline, sometimes the melody first depends on what kind of genre and song I’m writing and then onto arrangement. To me this can make or break a tune its all about the vibe and the way the energy flows to explain the story of the track moving onto effects and vocals if needed and hours and hours of tweaking sounds from there until the product is finally finished.
How do you decide which tracks to play when DJing to get the dance floor jumping? This is a good question! I play at a lot of different venues and some have very different musical taste then others so if you’re just now starting out listen up and keep this as a rule of thumb. When you are playing out as a DJ remember to play for the crowd not just for you, sure play signature tunes that your friends and fans want to hear but also if you are playing at a designated sound night let’s say a dubstep weekly don’t play epic trance and vise versa. Read the crowd and watch the feedback they give you on the breakdowns, that should be all you need to see what direction to go when playing out live.
How long have you been producing and or Djing? I started DJing when I was 15 as a hobby and 10 yrs later it turned into more of a job/career. Been producing for about 3 years but just now making that the priority on the totem pole.
