The Sweet Science: What’s So Smart About Getting Punched In The Face?
By Tim Starks
Most nerds don’t associate anything pleasant with fisticuffs, having spent a lot of time on the wrong side of fights as youths. But during boxing’s modern era, some prominent scholarly/artistic writer-types have become enraptured with the sport; more than a few smart people have inhabited professional pugilism; and there’s great intelligence to be found in the practice of boxing itself. I’ll walk you through the places where mind and body intersect in a sport that is often regarded as mere brutality by its detractors, but that its bards refer to as “the sweet science.”
Bio: Tim Starks is the founder of The Queensberry Rules, which Gawker has deemed “THE best boxing blog.” He also has written about boxing for such myriad publications as The Ring – “The Bible of Boxing” – and Bookforum. By day, he writes about spies and terrorists for Congressional Quarterly. He has been threatened with death by more than one reader of his blog, and has been called a “crackhead” on national television.
Attack of the Theocrats: A Plan for a More Secular America
By Sean Faircloth
Attention Spaghetti-Monster Worshippers, Atheists, and Thomas Jefferson! Long before Rick Perry announced his candidacy, the wall between church and state had already crumbled dangerously. Not only does Sean Faircloth's book, Attack of the Theocrats, have a really cool 50s sci-fi cover, but it also explains the many ways religious bias in law today already hurts people. The book, and Sean's presentation, will offer a specific plan and vision for a Secular America and Secular Americans.
Bio: Sean Faircloth served ten years in the Maine legislature as a lefty advocate for justice and inclusion. On a whim, Attorney Faircloth also started a successful interactive children's museum. In DC for two years, Faircloth has lobbied for acceptance and inclusion of nontheist Americans on the Hill, and now, using his experience in passing over thirty laws, Faircloth is Director of Strategy and Policy for the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science. Faircloth's book, Attack of the Theocrats, is officially released February 15, but advance copies are available at amazon and on nook and at richarddawkins.net.
Guess What? Chicken Butt.
By Luke Cole
Chickens get a bad rap, mostly for their crap. In the mid-Atlantic, the poultry industry—and the resulting chicken manure—has been accused of polluting coastal waters with excess nutrients, leading to harmful algae blooms and the loss of fish and shellfish habitat. This talk will shine a new light on the environmental impact of the poultry industry in the mid-Atlantic, and maybe even make a case to exonerate the chickens.
Bio: Luke just started a fellowship at the EPA after earning his PhD at UVA. Before moving to DC, Luke had three backyard chickens (Arlene, Charlene, and Margie), named after his mom and two of her friends.
