January 27 is a very important date, indeed. It is the birthday of Lewis Carroll, the legendary Victorian writer who created Alice in Wonderland and other works. This master of psychedelic whimsy left an indelible mark on popular culture and music which is still being felt. In acknowledgement and exploration of this delightful truth, the Cheshire Rock Opera was born!
The brainchild of Oakland artist Sean Lee, The Cheshire Rock Opera, now in its 9th year, is a full-immersion participatory experience weaving together popular songs, musical renditions of Carroll’s works, and audience interaction, at a costumed Tea Party you will never forget!
In the first flickerings of this Year of the Rabbit, the Oakland Metro Operahouse is your host for “Down the Rabbit Hole”, and Wonderland-themed costumes are strongly encouraged!
This madcap evening features a “Queen’s Concert”, a variety show with special musical guests from Oakland’s bohemian underground. All those in Alice costumes are invited to join the Alice Costume & Dance Competition for fantastic prizes. In addition, local artists will be on hand with vending booths to ply their wares.
The evening culminates in a mindblowing performance by Wanderlust Circus, making a special appearance from Portland, Oregon!
Wanderlust Circus has established itself as the premiere circus operation in The City of Roses, helmed by Noah Mickens and Nick "The Creature" Harbar, and drawing from a roster of performers, designers and technicians from all the greatest shows on Earth. Acrobats, aerialists, hand balancers, stilt dancers, trick ropers, jugglers and jazz-bos, crooners and clowns - ancient arts revived for the 21st Century’s reawakening.
