On Friday, January 20th at noon, Santa Clara County Move To Amend (MTA) will join with MTA chapters across the US in a national day of resistance to corporate personhood and the negative impact corporate power has on our democracy.

Our demonstration will take place in St. James Park across from The Old Courthouse, at St. James and N. First Streets. This is where the initial case, Southern Pacific Railroad v. Santa Clara County, set the stage for the for the Supreme Court “decision” that defined corporations as people in1886.

Corporate personhood has given corporations (factitious entities) many of the rights of real people (us). Giving these rights to corporations has allowed them to influence and undermine our democracy. The most recent Supreme Court decision, Citizens United v. FEC, defined money as speech, and also said that we could not limit a corporations right to free speech (limit how much they could contribute to political campaigns).

In their decision they acknowledged that this would give corporations a great advantage over real people because of their vast financial resources when it comes to influence in these political campaigns, but this was not important enough to interfere with their First Amendment rights!

The focus of this demonstration will be declaring and signing our own Declaration of Independence from Corporate Rule. We will also have representatives from community groups voicing their opposition to corporate personhood, skits, music and lots more!

After the rally, we will march to city hall to hear from Occupy movements around the Bay Area and then on the the Federal Court at S. First and San Carlos.

Overturn Citizens United!
Eliminate Corporate Personhood!
