The films of Pedro Almodóvar entertain us with a dreamy, libidinous consciousness, opening hidden truths about the human heart. Almodóvar takes us to a parallel universe where the ties of friendship are stronger than the bindings of conventionality, and where in caring for his characters we enter into surprising identification with them. As Almodóvar said, “My vision of desire [is] something that's both very hard and very human. By this I mean the absolute necessity of being desired and the fact that in the interplay of desires it's rare that two desires meet and correspond."
This one-day symposium held in cooperation with the UCLA Department of Biobehavioral Sciences and Psychiatry examines Almodóvar’s films from several post-Freudian psychoanalytic perspectives is sponsored by the New Center for Psychoanalysis. Extensive use of film clips illustrate and highlight the discussions. Continuing Education Units for medical and mental health professionals.
