What does sending hay from Wisconsin to farmers and ranchers in Texas and Oklahoma have to do with you? If you like to eat, this matters to you!
Texas and Oklahoma spent the summer in the worst drought ever on record. No rain and almost 100 days over 100 degree weather makes once fertile fields turn to dust. Dust in the field instead of corn, hay and other livestock feed has resulted in farmers having to sell off all of their cows or greatly reduce their herd size. Estimates are the 75% of the cows in the entire states of Texas and Oklahoma have been sold because there simply isn't anything to feed them. Soon the price of beef will be going up across the nation because there are less mama cows making new beef cows, less steers growing, and less beef available. Even the peanuts didn't grow this year!
So how does sending hay from Wisconsin help? For those farmers who are hanging on it helps to provide nutritious (Wisconsin makes great hay!) feed for their animals. It also lets them know we care! The Waupun Equipment Hay Drive has sent over 96 tons of hay south already. That's 6 semi loads, all of the hay has been distributed to small beef and dairy producers in Texas and Oklahoma at absolutely no cost to the farmer. How can we do this great thing? Our awesome Wisconsin farmers have donated hay from their fields. Trucking companies have put wheels under the hay at reduced prices, people and companies from all over the country have donated funds to help cover the fuel and you came out for a fun night, some burgers and drinks at AJ Bombers.
