A DAY FOR WRITERS IN STEAMBOAT SPRINGS (JULY 13-14, 2012)
31st annual event will provide a sharp focus within a short time frame. Novices and professionals alike will enjoy experiencing the day’s program in the old train depot’s relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Sponsored by the Steamboat Springs Arts Council and Writers Group, this year’s conference features author Larua Pritchett and e-publising expert Brian Schwartz. Emcee Susan de Wardt will provide lighthearted continuity for a day of writing exploration. Friday evening’s optional ‘Meet and Greet’ pre-conference buffet is followed by Ten Minutes of Fame hosted by local author Cesare Rosati. All participants are invited to read from their published or unpublished work. Since the number of participants is limited, early registration is recommended.
WORKSHOPS
The Art of the Personal Essay Laura Pritchett will focus on the essentials of turning personal experience into compelling narrative. Learn how to 1) turn experience into story and 2) make that story have “universality” (as in, how to make your story matter to others). Discussion includes nonfiction fundamentals: the central dramatic questions and themes, how to craft scenes, ways to build tension, and the ever-tricky business of pacing through the balanced use of showing and telling.
Book or Nook? Whether or not you desire to self-publish or seek out a traditional publisher, Brian Schwartz, the Kindle Expert will demystify ebook publishing and reveal some startling facts. He’s helped over a hundred authors, including several NY Times best-sellers, shift into the next era of publishing.
Love the Outdoors? Write it. . . Feeling deeply connected to places often warrants expression; many nature-lovers seek a way to communicate their ideas/bonds/hopes to a larger audience. However, there’s a real trick in rendering place – connecting the “external landscape” of the world to the “internal landscape” of you or your characters. In this class, Laura Pritchett will show what contemporary nature writers are doing, how they’re doing it, and to what effect. Appropriate for all genres.
Pixels to Profit… Decided to jump onto ebook bandwagon? Ready to make money from your writing? Brian Schwartz will distill over three years of experience in e-publishing down to 60 minutes. He’ll share his ‘7 secrets’ every author should know to put you on the right track. This is your opportunity to learn from someone in the day-to-day trenches of digital publishing.
