“What other choice is there but to hope? We have two options…give up or fight like hell.” –Lance Armstrong.
Dear Friends and Family,
On June 1, 2013, I and 90 fellow UT Austin students will embark on a 70 day, 4500 mile bike ride from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska as representatives of the 2013 LIVESTRONG Texas 4000 for Cancer team.
I was inspired to join Texas 4000 by the work of my grandfather Dr. Yogesh Awasthi and my uncle Dr. Sanjay Awasthi. For decades, these men have dedicated their lives to finding a cure through scientific research. Though I cannot join them in the laboratory, I hope to symbolically fight alongside them as a Texas 4000 rider.
Since cancer survivor Chris Condit founded the organization in 2004, more than 350 Texas 4000 riders have cycled over 1.8 million miles and raised over $2 million. Texas 4000 is a journey that will require courage, endurance, and support—that’s why we see it as a metaphor for battling cancer. But Texas 4000 is more than a cross-continental bike ride.
Our mission is to share hope, knowledge, and charity from Texas to Alaska and beyond. We share hope by riding for those who cannot and standing in solidarity with those battling the disease. We share knowledge by bringing life-saving cancer prevention information to communities along the way. We share charity by committing ourselves to finding a cure and leading the charge in the fight to end cancer.
Every year, Longhorns from all walks of life – students of art, science, literature, and engineering from small towns and big cities – are brought together by this common goal. Each rider must raise $4,500, or $1 for every mile we ride. With your help, I hope to raise $9,000, $2 for every mile I will ride. Over 90% of the riders’ personal fundraising has been donated directly to research initiatives at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the University of Texas Biomedical Engineering Department, and to survivorship programs at LIVESTRONG. No donation is too small to help win this fight.

Yours in the fight against cancer,
Sujata Awasthi
