“We have two options: give up, or Fight Like Hell.” - Lance Armstrong
On June 1, 2013, myself and 90 other students from the University of Texas will embark on the journey of a lifetime. Over the course of 70 days we will each bike 4500 miles from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska sharing Hope, Knowledge, and Charity for the fight against cancer.
As a member of the 2013 LIVESTRONG Texas 4000 for Cancer team, I am riding in the world’s longest annual charity bike ride. The organization was started in 2004 by a student who battled and survived cancer himself. With nine teams that have come before us, this organization has already donated millions of dollars for cancer research, with much of that going to the amazing M.D. Anderson cancer treatment & research hospital in Houston.
This organization however is much more than just a fundraising cross-continental bike ride. Along our ride, we will stop in cities, towns, churches, schools, community meetings, and at cancer-fighting events to put on programs about cancer-awareness. We will speak to others about the early detection and prevention of cancer, and inspire hope in those affected by cancer that we meet along the way. Our team will split into three groups; one group will travel along the West Coast, one will travel through the Rockies, and a third will travel through the Heartland in order to reach the most people that we can with our message.
For the first time in Texas 4000 history, we are able to reach even more people through our new third route. We continue to grow every year, donating more and touching more lives. My teammates and I will spend the next year planning all the details for our entire summer. We will be responsible for finding housing and food along the way, securing media opportunities, preparing a program, volunteering, and of course training. However, we can't do it alone. In order to make this trip successful, we need your help.
