Woah. 2012. Has it really been a year since the last CanLIT at the epic Merchandise Lofts rooftop party room? It has. It has. And I still miss my giraffe.
Well, we've had some trouble finding a venue this year due to a series of sticker and shelving incidents over the last couple of years. Thankfully, this year's venue is made out of cinder block, so we're relatively certain the building will be safe, if not the plumbing.
Originally, brought to you by Jay Goldman (Mr Mobile) and Lee Dale (I Need Sugar/Say Yeah!), CanLIT presents the finest in Canadian culture and our Toronto community. Sadly, Jay won't be able to join us this year, so Lee will be asking a few people for some support over the next week (yeah, it's this Saturday, man!) The usual suspects will be spending the day Saturday getting the space ready for a fabled evening of alchoholic training. Thanks in advance to efforts from Qasim Virjee, Matt Rintoul, and more.
This year's venue is a glorious cinder block monument on the north side of Richmond, between Bathurst and Spadina. Easily accessible by TTC, bike, or foot. Just don't drive. Like last year's venue, there's a glorious patio, though not as high up and, overall, far more intimate than last year. It should be the perfect space, but be prepared, there are stairs.
Leave your books at home, kids, and bring all the bevvys you can carry. Once again, we'll be sporting the community drinks bar, certain to be bigger, better, and more diverse than ever (there will be Bourbon for you Justin. Promise. And your jacket from last year. :-)). We'll have a number of mixers and taste treats on hand, so you just need to worry about getting your pretty little buns to us with your favourite booze in hand.
There's also a Loblaws right next door on Queen, a beer store on Queen just west of Bathurst, and a Liquor store at King and Spadina. All open into at least the first hour of the evening.
DRINKS WITH FRIENDS
Remember, sharing is caring. And we're all at CanLIT to learn from one another. Bring your favourite beverage and slap it on the bevvy table(s). Grab what you like. Try something new. Ask a friend to mix their favourite drink for you or experiment on your own. Share and share alike. Just be sure you don't show up empty handed, 'cause that's just not nice.
ENTERTAINMENT
Lee and Qasim will be sharing some late night duties on the decks, but for the rest of the night we're opening up the soundsystem to you. Through the magic of the Remote app on your iPhone, you'll be able to see what songs are in queue, request a new one, and yell drunkenly at people to vote for your song. Each heart clicked pushes your song further up the queue, so you can completely steal the speakers if everyone agrees your song choice is the right song choice. Nice.
TIPS FOR ENJOYING YOUR TRAINING
1. Be prepared to drink. Everyone else will be nuttered and acting foolishly, you should too. (Unless you're Andre or a Khan brother, at which point, good luck to you!)
2. DO NOT DRIVE (see item 1). If your friends are talking about driving, talk them out of it. One night in a cab doesn't hurt your wallet.
3. Arrive early. If you come late, you'll be the odd sober person trying to acclimate to chaos (you can ask Lucia and Meghan what that's like).
4. Remember: this is a friendly environment. If you fuck with someone else's drink without their knowledge you will be tossed down the stairs. No exceptions.
TICKET PRICES
We have to charge HST. We have to pay ticket fees (sorry, we weren't able to use GuestList this year due to some PayPal issues). We have to pay for venue cleaning. We have to rent speakers. And we want to make sure we have more ice, more drinks, and more food this year. So, 10 bucks, plus service charges. A small price to pay for what is sure to be an epic evening. We hope you'll agree.
