SUMMARY:The Keith Haring mural project
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE:  we're exploring a joint effort with SW HIV/AIDS
 coordinated with the scheduled opening of their new Center at the
 old Channel 12 News Building on Portland St downtown.\n
 \n
 The Keith Haring mural project is an homage to urban community
 public mark making\, an ancient tradition.  We will interpret the
 historical image created by Keith Haring and high school students
 from South Mountain High School in 1986.  This work will be
 executed by a wide range of artists on a single day and
 celebrated with a multi media arts festival.  It is intended to
 stand where it is executed until a suitable permanent home can be
 found for it.\n
 \n
 The original mural was 125 feet in total length and wraps around
 a corner\, standing over 8 feet tall - at over 1\,000 square
 feet.  We seek an equivalent space for it\, and will redesign the
 interpretation to fit the space we can obtain.  We feel it is
 important to wrap the interpretation around a corner in order to
 present the sense of discovery a viewer has approaching the
 corner and finding the design resolving into an apelike form.\n
 \n
 The original was executed on plywood\, an easily transportable
 surface.  We intend to work with the project site owner to find a
 mutually acceptable portable surface on which to apply paint.\n
 \n
 We intend to install the project in October\, 2012\, and will
 mount a Kickstarter campaign to raise funding for and awareness
 of it. So keep an eye out for it.\n
 \n
 It is impossible to estimate precise costs for the project's
 creation and maintainance until a site and surface are agreed
 upon - the variables include surface and paint costs for up to
 1\,000 square feet\, availability of a project installation prep
 site nearby\, street closure costs to install the project and
 house the accompanying festival\, and maintainence expense over
 some duration.\n
 \n
 We expect to raise between $15\,000 and $50\,000 for these
 purposes.\n
 \n
 Our next step is to select an installation site\, speaking with
 interested property owners\, construction companies and the
 like.\n
 \n
