The debut album from Ethiopian-Finnish folksinger Mirel Wagner is a haunting, quiet piece of work that is unflinchingly melancholy and subtly poetic. Mirel draws from a deep tradition of moody, introspective songwriters like Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake, combining stoicly picked, almost trance-inducing acoustic guitar, a voice you wouldn't expect to hear from a 23 year old, and lyrics that deal with dark and ghostly themes: necromancy, love, death and the devil. Mirel's music is deeply intimate and startlingly beautiful, and signals the emergence of a striking new talent.
