This is the 3rd year that we will add a Friday “northeast extension” to the weekend Big Parade. Inspired by” Le Grande Depart” of the Tour de France, we call this the “Prologue”.
“Tales of the Arroyo” takes in the neighborhoods surrounding the Arroyo Seco from South Pasadena to Montecito Heights. The Gold Line will be our lifeline as we start walking from one station and end at another with a mid-walk join/depart option at a 3rd station.
As with previous prologues, expect a smaller group. Along with some public stairways, we’ll make a point of enjoying the craftsman tradition and other historic/cultural assets of northeast LA.
Segment 1: 9:30 am to 12:15pm – 5 ½ miles. Highlights: South Pasadena, Garvanza, Johnson Lake, Church of the Angels, Mt. Angelus. We do seven public stairways in this stretch.
At the midpoint in central Highland Park we’ll steer towards businesses where walkers can purchase food to go and find an available bathroom. You can join or leave us here. We’ll sit with our lunch in La Tierra de la Cuebra, an intriguing art park. (240 S. Ave 57 – if you want to join us for the 2nd half but are running late, we will likely be there). Pack your own lunch if you prefer.
Segment 2: 12:45-3:30 – 5 ½ miles, highlights: great Highland Park architecture, pauses at the Abbey San Encino and Judson Studios, Hermon, a mile of Debs Park trail, a pause at the Audubon Center, and a stop at the Lummis House. We do seven more public stairways in this stretch.
We have a few steep uphill bits but on balance this is a mostly level walk. You need good shoes for the pounding pavement and “barefoot” walkers need to consider the mile of pebbly dirt trail. Provide for protection from the sun and to carry enough water to last a two hour stretch. This is a linear walk – not a loop. We take transit ($1.50) to get back where we started.
Meeting point: Buster’s Ice Cream and Coffee 1006 Mission St 91030 – across from Mission Gold Line Station – there is unrestricted street parking a few blocks north.
Mid-walk meet place: Highland Park Gold Line-look for us by Ave 57 and Figueroa around Antigua Bread-best to let me know in advance if you are joining at the middle.
Walk ends Heritage Square Gold Line station 3545 Pasadena Ave 90031
